Progressive jackpots: how the big prizes work
A progressive jackpot is the one part of a casino where a single spin can pay millions. That prize is not free: players fund it, spin by spin, and the odds of hitting it are long. Here is how the system works.
Fixed or progressive
A fixed jackpot is written into the rules and never moves: if the top prize is €10,000, it stays €10,000. A progressive jackpot grows with every bet. A small slice of each stake, usually 1% to 3%, goes into the pool. When someone wins, the meter drops back to a starting amount, the seed, and starts climbing again.
The networks behind the records
The largest prizes come from games linked across many casinos, so thousands of players feed the same pool.
- Mega Moolah (Microgaming) has four tiers, Mini to Mega, and holds the online record of about €19.4 million, won in 2021. Its total RTP is around 88.12%.
- Mega Fortune (NetEnt) paid €17.8 million in 2013, a record at the time. The jackpot is decided on a bonus wheel.
- Hall of Gods (NetEnt) uses a Norse theme and has passed €7 million more than once.
- Divine Fortune (NetEnt) runs smaller pools, so it pays out more often for lower amounts.
How a jackpot is triggered
Some games trigger the jackpot at random, on any spin, whatever the reels show; Mega Moolah does this with a wheel. Others need a specific combination, such as five jackpot symbols on a line. Either way the random number generator decides, and many games tie eligibility or better odds to bigger stakes.
Chasing a jackpot sensibly
- Budget first. Decide what the jackpot hunt is worth to you and stop there.
- Longer play does not help. Each spin has the same chance; time spent does not build up credit.
- Ignore the meter size. A big number does not mean a drop is close.
- Accept the lower RTP. Between jackpots, these games pay back less than standard slots.
Jackpots: frequently asked questions
Is a jackpot "due" after a long time without a win?+
No. The trigger is random on every spin. A jackpot that paid out a minute ago can hit again on the next spin, or go years without landing. The size of the meter tells you nothing about when it will drop.
Do I need to bet the maximum to win the jackpot?+
On some games, yes: the top prize or the jackpot wheel is only open at certain stakes. On others, every bet qualifies but bigger bets have a better chance of triggering the wheel. The game rules say which applies.
Why is the RTP lower on jackpot slots?+
Part of every stake goes into the jackpot pool instead of the regular paytable. Mega Moolah, for example, returns about 88.12% in total, against 96% or more on most standard slots.
